Fans of The Walking Dead have been a bit worried since the Season 7 finale aired, and it’s not because they’re never going to be able to look at pancakes the same way again. It’s because the TV show seems to be closing in on the comic books.

With the events that happened in “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life,” the show has reached the point of a major story arc from the comics, which involves a time jump of several years. After that arc takes place, there are, right now, no more issues out. This has some fans concerned that The Walking Dead may be forced to pull a Game of Thrones and surpass its source material.

But Dead producers have put that worry to rest, with creator Robert Kirkman saying, “If the show is gaining on the comic book, it’s at a very slow pace.” In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kirkman added, “We’re expanding storylines, so every now and then we zip through the comic book, and then we slow down for a while and add a bunch of stuff that’s not in the comics.”

That other ratings juggernaut, HBO’s Game of Thrones, sailed past the book plots in Season 6 when it caught up to the written material in A Dance With Dragons. And with two more rumored books, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, still unpublished, who knows when showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will get back on the GoT novels’ track.
