'Smash' Lives! 'Bombshell' Headed to Broadway (for Real)
The curtain may have been lowered on NBC’s Broadway drama Smash two years ago, but it turns out that you can’t keep a good musical down. Mere weeks after a one night only tribute concert that reunited many of the show’s stars to perform its Marilyn Monroe-centric show Bombshell, Universal Stage Productions announced today that they’re beginning development on an actual Broadway version of the musical-within-the-musical.
The idea of a Broadway-bound Bombshell originated before the series hit the air, a logical endpoint suggested by executive producer, Steven Spielberg. But the TV show traveled a bumpy road during its two-year lifespan, with mixed reviews, behind the scenes troubles, and declining ratings making its Great White Way appeal questionable. Still, Smash’s absence has only made our hearts grow fonder for the delightful Bombshell ditties composed by the powerhouse duo of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Exec producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will oversee the development of the stage version, and Spielberg will be involved as well. But don’t book your tickets just yet: The production is still in need of a book writer (after all, Debra Messing only had that job on TV), not to mention a cast. Still, we consider this smashing good news. Now, let’s start working on getting Hit List on Broadway so the two shows can square off at the Tonys for real.
