'Outlander' Stars Talk Corsets and Kilts

It’s true, the stars of Outlander have been known to wear little during those steamy love scenes, but, of course, Caitriona Balfe (Claire) and Sam Heughan (Jamie) spend most of their days on set fully clothed in a corset and kilt, respectively.

In the video above, Balfe explains that it takes 10-15 minutes for her to get laced up in Claire’s 1743 attire. While she jokes that all you can do is hope you’ve digested your breakfast at that point, on a serious note, she does say the garment informs the character: “Women at that time, it was sort of used to keep them constrained, because you can’t breathe fully, you can’t emote fully. It definitely takes some getting used to.” There is, however, one thing a corset makes easier. “It helps a little with the horse riding because it keeps you so upright,” she says. “But running up and down hills, running over the ramparts of the castle… It was very funny: the director’s like, ‘Right, so you count to five, fall down, then get right up.’ And then you’re like, ‘But I can’t. I have no abs anymore.’”

In the video below, Heughan shares the dos and don’ts of kilt-wearing. He also answers two other burning questions: When shouldn’t fans ask him for an autograph? And if they want to buy him a drink, what should they send over? The latter response might surprise you.
