'MasterChef Junior' Sneak Peek: 1 Souffleé Shall Fall

With four cheftestants left on MasterChef Junior, we’ve reached a classic test of culinary skill: the soufflé. There are three girls and one boy left in the competition, and if Zac is eliminated, that means this season’s winner will be the youngest yet.

If the egg whites aren’t whipped enough, a soufflé won’t rise; over-whipped, and they won’t mix with the rest of the ingredients. The resulting dish is so light and airy that the slightest misstep at any stage will make them fall flat.

The concern is evident in the body language of the kids. Nine-year-old Addison pulls out what Christina says is a “stunning” blackberry soufflé and Graham calls 10-year-old Amaya’s dark chocolate version, “Gorgeous.” Nine-year-old Avery’s soufflé looks to have risen properly, but Zac — the oldest at 12 — must saw furiously at the edges of his to, hopefully, lessen the effect of his pastry splitting.

Will the flavor of Zac’s milk chocolate soufflé make up for its other failings? There will only be two finalists left after this episode, so he’d better hope so.

MasterChef Junior airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
