John Oliver's Passionate Plea to Get Rid of the Penny

Since Sunday’s Last Week Tonight was its season finale, John Oliver thought he’d tackle a topic he called “tiny” and “totally fixable,” and that topic was the penny and whether it should still be in circulation. It costs just slightly more than one cent for the U.S. Mint to produce a penny, so why, he asked, are we still doing it? One reason may be slow news days for local reporters, who, it seems, more often than not, like to throw a bunch of pennies on the ground to see if passersby will stop to pick them up (spoiler alert: The answer is a resounding and constant no).

Another group adamant about keeping them around are Lincoln enthusiasts, for whom the five-dollar bill is simply not enough Lincoln. But perhaps the best thing to come out of John Oliver’s segment was a guy at a bike store, whose lack of interest in the matter was entirely meme-worthy.

Last Week Tonight airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
