Emmys: Anna Chlumsky Breaks Down Her Big 'Veep' Blowup

Anna Chlumsky is a two-time Emmy nominee for her role as Amy Brookheimer on HBO’s Veep, and if we get our way, she’ll score the hat trick when this year’s nominations are announced July 16.

We invited Chlumsky to Yahoo TV and asked her to talk us through Amy’s big blowup with President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her unexpected resignation as her campaign manager. “Her frustrations are basically coming out like a train wreck,” Chlumsky says, “and I think everyone has to watch it but she can’t stop it. This is what derailing is.”

If you can’t put your finger on why the scene, in which Amy tells Selina just how inept she is, felt different, Chlumsky can: “A lot of the time, that stuff doesn’t get said by the characters, and it’s not meant. Yes, we have many insults — and some of the insults you would think, maybe on paper, are even worse than what Amy says in this scene — but she just means it with all of her heart.”

On election night in the season finale, we saw Amy feel the need to be with Selina, who she had to literally prop up. Does that pave the way for Amy to return to Selina’s staff in Season 5? “I know that the writers’ room is busy at work right now and they’ve got lots of ideas that they’re all very excited about. We all had dinner together last week, and the writers are just stoked, and Julia’s stoked, and Dave Mandel, our new showrunner is stoked. So that’s a wonderful sign. But I haven’t a clue what’s to come,” she insists. “I’ll find out when our first rehearsals come around.”
