3 Emmy-Nominated Shows You Should Be Watching (But Aren't)

In this Peak TV era, it’s understandable that you’d feel overwhelmed by the amount of choices on network, cable, and streaming outlets. And then there’s the fear of starting a series only to watch it do a creative belly flop or, even worse, receive its cancellation papers just as it started getting really good. To ensure that you’re watching the peak of Peak TV, we’ve assembled a list of three Emmy-nominated shows that you should definitely be watching… if you haven’t started already.

The first is The Last Man on Earth, the post-apocalyptic, Emmy-nominated Fox comedy starring Will Forte as the titular not-so-solitary man. Kristen Schaal and January Jones also have prominent roles as the romantic foils in Forte’s life, and do their part to keep the laughs coming. For those looking for a more dramatic punch, check out Liev Schreiber in Ray Donovan, the Showtime serial about an L.A. fixer who helps his clients out of tight jams, even as his own life gets increasingly complicated. Schreiber just earned his first Emmy nomination for the series and, based on his gritty performance, we’d be scared not to vote for him.

Last, but not least is the HBO dramedy Getting On, which follows the overworked staff of a nursing home. Since aging can be a touchy subject, the series isn’t all “shiny happy people holding hands.” But it finds a lot of truth in its setting, and the cast — particularly Niecy Nash, who received a Supporting Actress Emmy nomination — is top notch. Despite low ratings, HBO renewed the series for a third and final season, so make sure to start watching Getting On now so they change their minds and let it run until the stars are in nursing homes themselves.

The Last Man on Earth returns Sept. 27 at 9:30 p.m. on Fox; Ray Donovan airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Showtime; Getting On can be viewed on HBO Go and HBO Now. The 67th Emmy Awards air Sept. 20 on Fox. Be sure to tune into Yahoo’s live Emmys pre-show on September 20th at 3:30 PM PT/ 6:30 PM ET.
