'Justified' Leads Critics' Choice Nominations

The Critics’ Choice TV nominations were announced Wednesday, and amongst the dramas and comedies, FX’s Justified led the pack with five nods — for Best Drama Series, lead actor Timothy Olyphant, supporting actor Walton Goggins, supporting actress Joelle Carter, and guest performer Sam Elliott.

It’s a fitting sendoff for the series, which wrapped its sixth and final season last month with a well-received finale that encapsulated everything it did best: surprising, beautifully-shot showdowns and conversations that could move you to laughter or tears.

As all the fawning think pieces published around the finale mentioned, Justified never had the ratings or buzz of Sons of Anarchy (fans of Goggins will be happy to know he also scored a Critics’ Choice nom for guesting as Venus Van Dam on SoA). Whether or not the show or actors win on May 31, when the Critics’ Choice Awards are broadcast live on A&E at 8 p.m., the attention should help assure those considering binge-watching the series this summer that the ending is worth the investment. (Seasons 1 through 5 are streaming free on Amazon Prime. Season 6 is available to buy.)

Also, the timing of the awards should serve as a reminder to Emmy voters, who begin their nomination voting June 15, that the series was one of TV’s best. The show has never cracked the Emmys’ Best Drama category. Olyphant and Goggins have each been nominated once. It’s only Emmy wins belong to supporting actress Margo Martindale and guest actor Jeremy Davies.
