5 New Casts for Old Sitcom Reboots

The announcement late last week that Craig T. Nelson will star in a new version of Coach got me thinking about other sitcoms that could be revived with new casts and fresh takes on old favorites. Here are five potential revivals that could become your next familiar favorite.

I Love Lucy: Aisha Tyler stars as the madcap housewife who wants to be a celebrity, much to the consternation of her band-leader husband Ricky Ricardo, played by the inimitable Pitbull.

Cheers: Ted Danson returns as an older, wiser Sam Malone, still holding out hope for Diane, played by Shelley Long because, well, heaven knows she’s available. Signed for an eight-episode limited run is Woody Harrelson as True Detective’s Marty Hart working undercover as Woody Boyd, and, making his sitcom debut, Rush Limbaugh as Norm.

The Jeffersons: Idris Elba demonstrates his comedy chops as the struttingly proud George Jefferson; SNL’s Leslie Jones co-stars as Weezy. Talk about movin’ on up: When these two go at it, sparks and laughs fly!

Saved by the Bell: The beloved school sitcom returns with a bright new cast of Bayside High School students, including Quvenzhane Wallis as Kelly (hey, Wallis is a good actor; she can “play old”) , Nashville’s Lennon Stella as Jessie (every other week, Jessie will be played by Maisy Stella), Xolo Mariduena — Victor from Parenthood — as Slater, and Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones’s King Jeoffrey!) as Screech.

The Golden Girls: Those sassy gals are back again, and spunkier than ever. Chelsea Handler stars as Dorothy, Alfre Woodard as Blanche, Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei as Sophia, and of course, Betty White as Rose.
