'Fresh Off the Boat' Sneak Peek: The Huangs Celebrate Chinese New Year — Will They See Red?

Chinese Lunar New Year is about to get the network TV treatment. The annual Chinese holiday is the subject of the midseason premiere of Fresh Off the Boat, but it’s safe to say this year’s celebration won’t be a traditional one for the Huang family.

In this exclusive sneak peek from the Fresh Off the Boat episode “Year of the Rat,” the Huangs are forced to celebrate Chinese New Year at the the Asian American Association of Orlando (aka, AAAOO), an organization run by a guy named Rick (Rob Huebel) and populated by a clearly non-Asian crowd. “Everyone here is Asian… or hoping to be associated with one,” Rick tells the confused clan. (By the way, if you’re wondering what Rick’s credentials are, he was born on a layover in Thailand.)

While the Huangs probably won’t cross paths with any other Chinese families at this particular celebration, all Eddie (Hudson Yang) cares about is getting his share of lucky red envelopes, as per the Chinese New Year custom. But from the looks of this half-baked celebration, Eddie may have to settle for some rat-shaped party glasses and a really bad dragon dance instead.

The Fresh Off the Boat episode “Year of the Rat” airs Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
