The Things About Travel That Makes Moms Crazy

On a recent trip to the Club Med Punta Cana with Cirque du Soleil, a family-friendly resort in the Dominican Republic, I met a bunch of outspoken moms from around the world who told me what bugs them the most when they’re traveling.

No Facilities

“When you go the bathroom and there are no changing tables. What do you do? If someone makes a face because you’re changing them on the floor or the seat next to them, you just grin and bear it.” —Shelley Massey, Atlanta, GA

Long Lines

“The amount of time it takes to get through an airport. Customs, immigration, understaffed airports (especially security), and having to fold up strollers.” —Mikhal Salzberg, Charlottesville, VA

Incorrect Assumptions

“I hate it when other people assume my kid is going to cause trouble.“ —Michelle Yu, Los Angeles

No Soap

Staffers Who Just Don’t Get It
“When people wake me up. If you see me sleeping on a lounge chair with an empty pina colada next to the pool and you come ask me a question, it’s going to hit the fan.” —Bethany Diffey, Charlotte, NC

Gross Bathrooms

“Bathrooms with mystery liquid everywhere. Not pleasant because the constant ‘don’t touch anything!’ factor is magnified. And if you’re potty training, it’s the worst! —Grace Williams, New Jersey

Poor service.

“It would be nice for someone to come down to the beach and serve me a drink.” —Jhoy Pulley, Midlothian, VA

Rude Fellow Travelers

“I miss the lack of consideration and politeness amongst travelers. While I try to be as self-sufficient as possible, offering a hand or letting me pass you would be nice. At bare minimum, when cutting me off, try not to swing into me and my baby in a sling with your giant backpack.” —Shruti Mathur, London

Bathroom Hogs

“I find it really annoying when adults don’t offer to let small children cut in line for the airplane bathroom. When they gotta go, they gotta go — trust me, it’s better for everyone to let them cut the line!” —Nicole Neroulias Gupte, Seattle

My Kids

“When my kids wake me up too early, that’s really annoying. Because they stay up late and we’re still asleep, but they still wake up super early.” —Mary Rocha, Houston

Picky Eaters

“The worst is when you go to an amazing restaurant and your kid orders chicken fingers — even with all your coaxing and you’re trying to get them to try something unique.” —Elizabeth Stark, Charlottesville, VA
