Your Ultimate Cirque du Soleil Fantasy Comes True at Club Med

“Life is too short,” says 78-year-old Carol Berger.

The grandmother from Pittsburgh, Pa., is visiting Club Med Punta Cana with Cirque du Soleil in the Dominican Republic, along with 14 members of her family.

When she booked the trip, she didn’t realize the hotel had launched the new “Creactive” program, which allows kids and adults alike to train like real Cirque du Soleil performers. Acrobatic and artistic activities include flying trapeze lessons, maneuvers on the aerial silks, mask making, and makeup tutorials.

While Club Med properties have been long known for offering sporty activities like windsurfing, archery, and trapeze, the new circus-inspired addition at the all-inclusive resort in the DR allows visitors to play in a whole new way.

“I got curious,” Berger said about her bungee trampoline experience. “I was afraid it would be hard on my muscles — it wasn’t. I didn’t realize it’d be so easy to be in the circus! It’s a wonderful opportunity to do something you never have a chance to do.”

Call it vacation-style circus school that gives a different kind of a break from the real world. Cirque-trained performers guide guests through various activities. Sometimes you just want to relax, but when you’re so busy learning a new skill or trick and having a ball (or attempting to juggle three), you don’t realize you’re working out.

While I was there, I learned to scale a “walking wall,” swing on a trapeze, juggle, and more.

This multi-dimensional trip trumps lounging lazily in a cabana by the beach. It reminds us all to reach high anytime and jump for joy.

As Grandma Berger advises: “Never stop being a kid.”
