This New Airplane Seat Will Blow Your Mind

Star Wars really is seeping into everyone’s brains — even airplane designers. A new idea from engineering firm Windspeed Technologies aims to put a couple of lucky passengers in a bubble seat on top of any plane. The see-through canopy looks a little like an upgrade of Luke Skywalker’s X-wing fighter cockpit…though passengers here won’t have to worry about any dodging any TIE fighters.

The design is called the SkyDeck, and the idea is that this special bubble could be added on to current airplane models — no airplane-from-scratch would be necessary (though we’ve reported on some other great aircraft designs we wouldn’t mind seeing in action).

As depicted in the video below, passengers would buckle into a pair comfortable plush seats, and then an elevator would raise the whole seat platform into the canopy, where they could then click some controls to rotate 360 degrees. Windspeed Tech explains a bit more on its website, stating, “The canopy will be made of similar high-strength materials as those used to build the canopies of supersonic fighter jets.”

Windspeed has also figured out a way to prevent condensation, so your view doesn’t get all fogged up.

The cost of adding a 360-degree viewing platform? Between $8 and $25 million depending on the type of plane you start with. But what you’d end up having to pay to sit there is still a mystery.

Now we just have to come up with a name for this special cabin class: Bubble Premium? First View? Maybe even…Red Five?
