This week’s “Yahoo! Travel Photo of The Week” was captured by Canadian Bradford Duplisea using the small unobtrusive, Sony Cyber-shot. The wonderfully reposed little guy you see above lives in Mandalay, Myanmar, also known as Burma. (There’s a pretty good chance that this is a “Burmese” cat, famous for its laid-back attitude; a Burmese kitten might set you back a thousand dollars in the U.S.).
A sleeping cat is universal, but as we stop to think about it, it’s deeply humanizing: humans like cats. I will call that my “Unifying Cat Theory.” To those of you who dislike, even abhor, cats, I understand and appreciate your feelings. Cats can be aloof and condescending. But they sure can show us how to be comfortable.
Tip of the week:
One of the important things to remember when we photograph animals (and little children, for that matter) is to get down on their level. It shows respect and it shows us the world from their perspective. Mr. Duplisea’s photo displays just that, we get a good sense of how high the doorstep is; we see the places that the painter missed after doing such a good job on the doors. One can easily imagine the cat’s human coming and opening the door; the cat lifting his head; stretching; looking up at the human, then going in with total insouciance.
