How to Vacation Like a Disney Princess

As the mother of a 3-year-old girl, I now live in a world where princesses are a hot topic of conversation (though Lucy announced this week that she’s no longer a princess and is now the queen).

One of the things I love most about the Disney princesses is that they are from far-flung lands and inspire daydreams of travel to castles and exotic locales. When Disney recently announced its newest princess, Moana, I couldn’t have been more pleased, since Hawaii tops the list of places I want to take my daughter.

And the good news is that whether you’re crazy for Cinderella or all about Ariel, there’s a place you can go and channel your inner princess.

Here’s how to travel like a royal, Disney royalty, that is.

Moana

Where She’s From: Disney’s newest Polynesian princess hails from the South Pacific and sails across the Pacific Ocean in honor of her ancestors.

How You Can Do It: Moana would feel right at home at Hawaii’s Aulani — and so will you. This palatial resort on the island of Oahu is part of the Disney family and pampers princesses of any age with pool parties, catamaran trips, and spa treatments for the whole family.

Anna and Elsa

Where They’re From: Frozen Princesses Anna and Elsa live in Arendelle, which is based on a town in Norway called Arendal.

How You Can Do It: Want to head to the land of Frozen? Hop aboard the Disney Magic and cruise the Norwegian fjords. Or if you want to stay closer to home, Hotel de Glace, an ice hotel just outside the center of Quebec City, brings Elsa’s frozen castle to life.

Cinderella

Where She’s From: Cinderella lived in a castle that was inspired by many chateaus and palaces across Europe.

How You Can Do It: The most famous place to visit is Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle, which was also the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Another inspiration: Château de Chenonceau, surrounded by stunning gardens in the Loire Valley of France.

Tiana

Where She’s From: Princess Tiana kissed a frog and then explored New Orleans.

How You Can Do It: Tiana loved the Big Easy’s French Quarter, and so will any modern-day princess. You can even ride the St. Charles Avenue streetcar through the French Quarter, just like Tiana. The most regal place to stay is the Windsor Court, which refers to its staff as the royal family.

Belle

Where She’s From: Bookworm-turned-princess Belle lived in a village called Little Town that is straight out of the Alsace region of France.

How You Can Do It: You can just picture Belle skipping down the medieval streets in the Alsatian villages of Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé. The Beast, on the other hand, dwelled in a replica of the Chateau de Chambord in the Loire Valley.

Rapunzel

Where She’s From: In Tangled, Rapunzel let down her hair in the mythical island kingdom of Corona.

How You Can Do It: The castle was modeled after Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, which has a fairytale setting. Every day, access to the castle is cut off by the rising tidal waters that rise up around the village.

Ariel

Where She’s From: We all know Ariel is from the sea, but did you know that her character is supposedly from Denmark and her prince lived in a Swiss castle? (Very jet set, that Ariel.)

How You Can Do It: Head to Chateau de Chillon on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. It was the inspiration for Prince Eric’s seaside castle in The Little Mermaid. Or get your mermaid fix in an underwater room at the Manta Resort on Pemba Island in Zanzibar, off the coast of Africa.
