Springfield Police warn of computer scam

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Springfield Police Department is warning Microsoft computer users of a scam involving fake error messages.

A pop-up window will appear, claiming it’s from Microsoft. The “error” message then tells users to call a specific number for assistance. Police say not to call this number, as Microsoft will never display pop-ups urging you to dial them.

Instead, Springfield Police suggest you do the following:

  • Stay calm and assess the situation.

  • Exit the pop-up window by clicking the “X” in the corner or by using the task manager. Do not be fooled by any fake “X” buttons or links within the pop-up.

  • If your computer freezes, take it to a professional.

  • After closing the pop-up, use a trusted antivirus software to run a thorough scan of your computer. This will help check for viruses and malware.

  • Never send money. If a message asks you to visit a Bitcoin ATM and deposit funds, it is likely a scam.
