Spartanburg parking garages go cashless with new parking kiosk systems. What to know

Spartanburg's parking garages are going cashless.

The city announced this week that all city-owned parking garages will transition to using parking kiosks starting June 1. The parking kiosks will accept debit or credit card payments.

City Communications Manager Christopher George said Wednesday that the change was part of an effort to update and simplify downtown parking operations. The parking garages will remain open during the kiosk installation.

"The kiosks folks will be using in our parking garages are similar to those found in many of our peer communities, and they’ve become the standard used in most cities throughout the country," George said.

The standard daytime fee of 50 cents per hour with a $4 daily max will continue for those utilizing the garages from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekdays after 5 p.m. and weekends are still free.

"The new system will be entirely cashless, and that will be clearly indicated with signage at the garage entrances," George explained. "There will be no attendant, but the kiosks have a call button that connects to 24/7 customer service to address any issues users may have with the system. Those with handicap parking placards or tags will also be able to use this call button to confirm their tag and have the gates raised remotely, as they’re allowed to park for free."

The new kiosks will be implemented in all downtown parking garages, except for the courthouse parking garage and the recently-approved baseball stadium garage, which are not city-owned.
