LEGO Lord of the Rings Barad-Dur Brings Mordor Home

Action figure lines may not make those super-huge base playsets like they used to back in the ’80s. LEGO, however, still does, and today they’ve announced the ultimate bad-guy base for The Lord of the Rings.

Sauron’s tower of Barad-Dur, in the heart of Mordor, isn’t just a buildable replica, it’s a full-on playset! It’s also modular, as in buying multiples will allow fans to build a taller tower. One is merely $459.99, so that shouldn’t be too much to ask, right? Since there already is an Orthanc playset — though it costs about twice the price these days — you now can own The Two Towers, literally.

The Eye Has It

The multi-layer playset includes a dungeon and weapons forge behind its great gates. Above that, a dining room for orcs indicates that meat is indeed back on the menu. Sauron’s throne opens to reveal a secret map room, while the Mouth’s chamber includes a humorously worshipful painting of his Dark Lord. The top room features a ladder up to the roof, where a light-up Eye of Sauron rotates. Ten included minifigs feature Sauron, Mouth of Sauron, Frodo, Sam, Gollum, Gothmog, and some Orcs.

Fully built, the tower stands nearly three feet tall, 11 inches wide, and 17 inches long. You might want to wait and build a shelving unit around it. On-sale date is June 1st for LEGO Insiders, and June 4th for the general public. Any purchases at LEGO stores or online will also include a free Fell Beast set with a Nazgul minifig.

Following LEGO’s large Rivendell playset, it appears the company likes to go big with their environments, so can we expect Minas Tirith next? Or they could just go the Masters of the Universe route and make an insanely huge playset called “Middle-earth.” Just don’t make an expensive mega-set for Amazon’s The Rings of Power, if they’re actually intended to sell.
