Free smart irrigation controllers to be available for Fresno homeowners

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Eligible water customers in Fresno will be able to receive a free smart irrigation controller.

Beginning Wednesday, May 15 at 8 a.m., officials with Fresno say they will be accepting applications from eligible water customers in the city to receive a free smart irrigation controller. 1505 smart irrigation controllers are available to the City of Fresno water customers living in a single-family residence within one of the seven city council districts.

This comes from a WaterSMART Water-Energy Efficient Grant through the United States Bureau of Reclamation. According to officials, the goal of the program is to enhance water conservation efforts by allowing customers to switch from a standard irrigation controller to a more efficient smart controller.

As part of the grant, officials say the program will retrofit controllers to 215 qualifying residential homes per council district on a first-come, first-served basis.

To apply, customers can visit the City of Fresno website beginning at 8 a.m. on May 15. Once approved, officials say customers will be contacted by a Water Conservation Specialist to schedule an appointment for installation assistance and programming of the smart irrigation controller.

By replacing a standard irrigation controller with a smart one, city officials say the average home can save more than 7,600 gallons of water annually.
