Fans of the hit video game Fallout 4 should get excited as the highly anticipated next-gen update is available now.

Gamers with a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or a PC will have access to the next-gen update and it's reportedly a big one, weighing in at 56.5 GB to download on the PS5.

Some of the updates in this free update include performance and quality mode settings, increased frames per second and resolution, bug fixes and support for widescreen and ultra-widescreen support.

If you're having trouble getting the new Fallout 4 update to download for PS5, you're not alone.

While game maker Bethesda said the PS5 update would be available for free to anyone who owns Fallout 4, they might have excluded players who have the PS+ version of the game.

If you fall into that category, you have the option to download the PS4 version or pay $19.99 to unlock the PS5 update.

How to get next-gen in Fallout 4?

  • PS5 and PS4: Once you have access to the update, select which version of Fallout 4 you want to download via your Collection. Then scroll through your games and select Fallout 4. This will bring up a menu to select the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. Make your selection and it will automatically start downloading.

  • Xbox Series X: Go to "My games and app" then click "see all," then "manage" and it should give you the option to click on any available updates. Click on update for Fallout 4 and it will automatically start downloading.

  • PC: Launch the Steam application, click on the library tab, right-click on Fallout 4 and select the update option. Then, you'll select properties from the pop-up menu and select the updates tab. You can also select to keep the game updated automatically in the automatic updates section.

Will Fallout 4 next-gen update break mods?

Yes, it's possible that if you've downloaded any mods to your Fallout 4 game that they could break with the new update.

Especially with the new Fallout TV show airing, many players have been downloading new mods inspired by the show.

Bethesda stated in a post on X on Thursday that "access to both Creation Club and / or the Mods Menu will temporarily be unavailable."

There's no word on when those features will be up and running again, but Bethesda's X post also said to keep an eye on the status page at beth.games/4ba7xUT.
