AAUW program aims to inspire young women to pursue a technical career

GAYLORD — The Gaylord branch of the American Association of University Women has launched a new initiative to encourage young women in Otsego County to consider a career in one of the STEM fields.

Beginning this summer, AAUW is offering financial assistance for local girls currently in grades 7 to 11 to attend one of many day and week-long STEM camps in Michigan. These camps offer activities highlighting careers such as engineering, robotics, ecology, computing, welding, electricity, environmental science and more.

AAUW financial assistance can be used towards the camp registration fee and transportation costs. More information about available camps and an application form can be found at gaylord-mi.aauw.net.

Since 2014, one of the AAUW Gaylord Branch’s priorities has been to encourage young women towards STEM careers. In an era when women are increasingly prominent in medicine, law and business, they are under-represented in the sciences, engineering and trades. The appropriate degree or training can lead a young woman towards careers with increasing income potential and future job growth.

In turn, having women trained in these areas helps ensure a more diverse talent pool is available. Attending a STEM-related summer camp can be the first step in inspiring a young person towards such a career.
