Toyota released pricing information for its off-road-focused Tacoma models with the hybrid powertrain on Tuesday, and boy are they pricier than we initially expected. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is slated to start at $65,395, whereas the all-new Trailhunter model carries a base price of $64,395.

Prices for the entire Tacoma lineup are higher than the outgoing generation, with a base-model SR Xtra Cab in rear-drive spec starting at $32,995. That’s about $2000 more than the entry-level 23MY pickup, but things only get worse as you work your way up the lineup. That’s particularly true of the off-road-focused models, with the TRD Pro costing nearly $17,000 more than its predecessor. The new model is significantly more kitted than the outgoing truck, complete with a hybridized 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 2.5-inch Fox Bypass shocks at all four corners, and an electronic stabilizer bar disconnect setup. The old truck still rocked drum brakes in the rear, after all. The interior is much improved as well, bringing a 14-inch infotainment screen, a fully digital gauge cluster, and bespoke IsoDynamic seats with air-over-oil shock absorbers for improved ride comfort and control on the trails.

The same 2.4-liter powertrain powers the Trailhunter model and also brings 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The truck is a bit less focused on desert running than the TRD Pro, with more of an overlanding bent to its layout. The package includes a full suite of underbody armor, as well as upgraded shocks from the 4x4 pros at Old Man Emu. Other highlights include an electronic locking rear differential, a high-mount intake, and bespoke visual adjustments. Customers looking for a six-foot bed will need to pony up an additional $500, bringing the base price up to $64,895.

Those prices put the new Tacoma off-roaders in a weird spot, as they’re significantly more expensive than other established players. The Ford Ranger Raptor starts at just $57,065 including destination, whereas the Chevy Colorado ZR2 starts at $49,990 with destination charges included. In fact, the full-size Ford F-150 Tremor carries a base price of $66,790 including destination and acquisition fees.

The range-topping off-road models aren’t the only ones that bring some serious price tags. TRD Off-Road customers have a number of options packages to choose from, but they require some serious investment. There are several TRD Off-Road Upgrade Packages on offer, which range from $4625 on up to $10,230 depending on your option selections. That means you can spec the mid-grade offering up to $53,525 including destination.

The Tacoma has been the best-selling mid-sizer for quite some time, but it will be interesting to see how fans react to the new pricing model. Regardless of how impressive the new TRD Pro and Trailhunter models are, buyers have never had more options when it comes to performance off-roaders.
