  • Former Yahoo engineer hacked 6,000 accounts in search of sexual content

A former Yahoo engineer pleaded guilty to hacking into roughly 6,000 accounts in search of sexual photos and videos. According to court documents, Reyes Daniel Ruiz, 34, used his employee access to Yahoo's internal network to crack users' passwords. He then downloaded explicit photos and videos to a personal hard drive, which he stored at home.

  • Yahoo’s redesigned Mail app aims to bring order to your inbox

The way we use email has changed a lot over the years, evolving from person-to-person communications to an all-in-one depository for newsletters, coupons, travel receipts and (a lot of) miscellaneous junk. This can lead to an overwhelmingly messy inbox, making it that much harder to find that e-ticket right before the concert. Yahoo Mail's revamped app, however, hopes to change that with an approach that prioritizes organization and avoid email overload (Full disclosure: Yahoo's parent company is Verizon, which is the same as Engadget's).

Now widely available on the web, "dynamic email" (as Google calls it) gives you web-based interactions that would normally require opening your browser. You can fill out forms, reply to Google Docs comments or even browse catalogs, among other things. • 'We Are Very Sorry'

Yahoo and CEO Marissa Mayer have had a no good, very bad week. Mayer acknowledged as much on Friday night in a post on her Tumblr, where she wrote that she and the company were "very sorry" for the prolonged Yahoo Mail outages that left people unable to access their email for several days this week. "This has been a very frustrating week for our users and we are very sorry," Mayer wrote.

  • Bad News For Marissa Mayer

This week, many attempting to access Yahoo's email service received a message saying the service is down temporarily for "scheduled maintenance." But on Wednesday, after online rage grew to a boiling point, Yahoo finally admitted that the outage was caused by more than just regular upkeep. "Some of our users have not been able to access their mail since 10:27 PM PT on Monday night, due to a hardware problem in one of our mail data centers," Jeffrey Bonforte, a senior vice president at Yahoo, said in a statement. • Yahoo Can't Get Its Employees To Use Yahoo Mail

Yahoo is having a difficult time getting its employees to switch to Yahoo Mail, according to a funny internal memo obtained by All Things Digital's Kara Swisher on Sunday. Yahoo's SVP of Communications Products Jeff Bonforte and CIO Randy Roumillat practically begged Yahoo's employees to switch to its "feature rich" Yahoo Mail service from Outlook, thanking the 25 percent (just 25 percent!) who have already made the change. The rest can't give up Outlook, and Yahoo's memo offers one reason why that may be: Employees who use Yahoo Mail apparently can't get corporate emails on the Yahoo Mail app on their phones.

  • Marissa Mayer Sparks Outrage From Longtime Yahoo Mail Customers

A lot of people are unhappy with the recent redesign of Yahoo Mail. A petition on Change.org titled "Bring back the old version of Yahoo Mail!" has more than 2,900 signatures. A Facebook group called "Yahoo's New Mail Fail" has 400 members.

  • Yahoo Mail for iOS gets a redesign, disposable email addresses, 1 TB storage, more

Yesterday was the 16th anniversary of Yahoo Mail and to celebrate, the company has completely redesigned its Yahoo Mail app for iOS. Not only does the app have a new look that fits nicely with iOS 7, it also adds some serious new features. First up are Conversations, which allows users to view related messages in a single grouped view (much the way "threads" work in iOS 7's Mail.app). Conversations can be turned on or off in settings for those that don't like to see messages grouped together. Another new feature is Themes, which allows users to personalize the look of their Mail app with a variety of background images. The app also now gives all users enhanced mail forwarding and filtering features. But perhaps the most exciting thing of all is now Yahoo is giving its mail users a whopping 1 TB of storage space. That makes Apple's 5 GB of free iCloud space look downright cheap. Yahoo Mail is a free download.

  • Yahoo Loses 6 Million Customers Over Email Hacking Problem

A British telecom company says it will no longer make Yahoo Mail the default email service for its 6 million customers due to concerns their accounts are vulnerable to getting hacked. “We will be switching customers’ email over to BT Mail, which will include the features and functions they expect from a modern email service,” said Nick Wong, online director for British Telecom’s consumer division, according to The Telegraph. The shift of BT's 6 million customers to another email service represents just a small fraction of Yahoo's overall email customer base of about 280 million people worldwide. But the loss of clients could be a troubling sign for a company that relies heavily on maintaining its email users to generate advertising revenue.

  • Yahoo axing six more apps and services as part of streamlining effort

Get ready to say goodbye to another another batch of Yahoo products at the end of this month. As the company continues to streamline and focus its services, March 31st will be the last day of stand-alone existence for Upcoming, Yahoo Deals, Yahoo Kids, Yahoo SMS Alerts, Yahoo Mail and Messages for feature phones. In a move designed to whittle down the company's 75 some-odd products to a group of about 15, this latest announcement comes a few weeks after the company nixed other services like its BlackBerry app. Additionally, if you've been hanging onto the old version of Yahoo Mail, you'll have no choice but to switch to the new version by June 3rd. There's no word on what we can expect next, although EVP of Platforms Jay Rossiter says cuts like these are needed so the firm can focus on more experiences like its new Mail and Weather apps. You'll find the details for each cut at the source link. Update: The total number of offerings being killed this time around is six, not seven as initially reported.

  • Yahoo rolls out Flickr-driven Weather app and new iPad mail app

Remember Yahoo? The company's attempt at a return to relevance is in full gear, with the introduction of two new free mobile apps -- Yahoo! Weather and a tablet version of Yahoo! Mail. If Burt Bacharach was still writing songs, he probably wouldn't write "What the world needs now is weather apps, sweet weather apps." After all, a day doesn't go by where yet another weather app is unleashed on the planet. But I have to admit, Yahoo did an incredible job with this app. Launching Yahoo! Weather for the first time, the app determines where you are and then pulls a Flickr image appropriate for the location and weather to be displayed on the screen. Those images change with changes in the weather, so you'll usually know at a glance what's going on in the great outdoors. %Gallery-186094% Swiping vertically in the app unveils a variety of detailed weather information, while swiping horizontally displays weather in other user-selected locations. Tapping on the map in the app, users can see satellite cloud images, a temperature map, a wind velocity map or a radar map for any of the locations. I'm not sure why, but all of the the maps with the exception of the radar imagery loaded very slowly for me. Still, the app provides a lot of weather information in a very attractive and immediately useful manner, and I can see Yahoo! Weather replacing several of the other weather apps on my iPhone. Yahoo! Mail now runs on either the iPad or iPad mini, with a full-screen reading mode for emails with embedded photos, newsletters or shared articles. The app also provides support for more languages and has advanced options for message actions. If you feel like browsing your inbox book-style, you can go to a full screen viewing mode and flick through your messages with a swipe.

  • Marissa Mayer planning to reveal her plans for Yahoo's turnaround tomorrow

The first "all hands" meeting of a CEO is always a time for high drama, so we're expecting big things tomorrow. New boss Marissa Mayer is telling employees about her plans to turn around the faded internet giant on Tuesday, with the same slides she used in closed-door board meetings in an act of "radical transparency." Yahoo's fortunes have been on the slide for a while, after Scott Thompson's scandal-ridden departure, patent clashes, security breaches and the sale of its Alibaba stake in order to spend $3.65 billion on quelling a shareholder revolution. A report from AllThingsD says that Mayer's likely to introduce progress and goal tracking as a measure of performance. The new system will run from the company as a whole right down to individual employees, something that she picked up from her tenure at Mountain View. The same report has revealed that Mayer's pushing to improve the consumer experience in its Homepage, Mail and Flickr offerings (amongst others) at the expense of advertising -- a move that'll win her plenty of fans used to the minimalist Google homepage.
