Calm Down, Willow Smith Isn't Actually Topless

Willow Smith has a sartorial sense that’s all her own. At 14 years old, she’s already set a handful of trends thanks to her constantly changing hairstyles and fashion-forward outfits. On Thursday, the teenager posted an Instagram of her wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier top; the vibrant turtleneck is cool, aspirational, and begging for a Forever21 knock off. But there’s a catch: it features a naked woman’s torso, breasts and all.

Because of Smith’s age, many are calling it inappropriate. “Not that pictures of boobs on T-shirts is ever a very classy way of walking around town, but on a young teenager like Willow, it goes beyond offensive and borders on criminal,” Jenny Erikson wrote on TheStir.com.

However, as any teenage girl can attest, boobs are hilarious. The developing body part is new and exciting and why not wear them on a shirt? At a time when celebrities are actually baring their breasts on social media as part of the #FreetheNipple movement to prove a sexist point, fellow women disparaging a young person of the same gender is disappointing. Smith herself even stood up for the cause a few months ago: “The day that women can casually be topless and not be raped or degraded will be the day that women will be equal in society.”
