Most retailers are committed to delivering the finest materials to their customers at the best prices. However, one e-commerce company is going above and beyond the call of duty with its latest move.

Everlane announced Monday it’s lowering the price of its cashmere crew from $125 to $100 because of the recent decrease in price of raw cashmere.

The San Francisco-based brand shared a statement on Instagram informing customers that the cost of the fiber had dropped 16 percent. “Sometimes it goes up. And when it does, retailers raise their prices. Sometimes it goes down. But when that happens, retailers almost never lower their prices. They just keep the extra profit. That’s not honest,” Michael Preysman, Everlane’s founder and CEO said. Everlane explained that the price cut stems from its commitment to “radical transparency.”

The cashmere crew comes in eight colors, and the traditional retail price of a cashmere crew sweater is listed as $210 on the company’s website. The sweater’s cost relies heavily on the fact that it is made of 100 percent grade-A Mongolian cashmere. Other retailers use different cashmere, which explains the wide range of prices in the cashmere industry.

The type of cashmere used in producing a product can affect its density, durability, and warmth level. The fibers, origin of production, and method of production all affect the quality of the materials sourced to make cashmere products. “Only the longest and finest fibers can be used — about 15 microns in diameter and 44 millimeters in length. This ensures higher tensile strength and a softer and more durable garment,” Everlane describes on its site.

Like Everlane, L.L. Bean also constructs its cashmere crewneck using Mongolian cashmere, which explains why its price aligns with the Everlane sweater, as it’s marked at $99. Italian cashmere is often more expensive though, and J.Crew’s comparable Cashmere Boyfriend Crewneck Sweater ranges in price anywhere from $160 to $200. Some luxury cashmere sweaters may retail for $1,000 and up depending on the material.

Since announcing the price cut, Everlane has been praised by customers on Twitter.

The company’s Instagram page has been flooded with positive feedback as well. “The price reduction is amazing,” one commenter wrote. “It is rare these days. Bought two!”
