This Is Why David Fincher Didn't Want To Direct 'Star Wars'

Much like the furore currently surrounding who will direct Bond 25 (we have some avant-garde suggestions, by the way) a similar situation arose when the Star Wars franchise was looking for someone to take the helm.

Before JJ Abrams was confirmed to direct the first instalment of the new series, The Force Awakens, it transpires that David Fincher was also in the running.

Fincher is known and celebrated for directing Seven, Gone Girl, Fight Club, The Social Network and TV series like House Of Cards and Mindhunter to name a few.

But when it came to climbing aboard the X-Wing and joining a galaxy far, far away he wasn't so sure. "I can't imagine the kind of intestinal fortitude one has to have," Fincher told Empire during their weekly film podcast.

"That's a whole other level. One is that you have to endure the withering abuse of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, and the other is you have to live up to a billion or a billion-five, and that becomes its own kind of pressure."

He added, "You'd have to really clear you head, I think. You'd have to really be sure this is what you wanted to do because either way it's two years of your life, 14 hours a day, seven days a week."
