Why Amy Schumer Might Have Worn an Orange Jumpsuit to the Women’s March

If any color was associated with the women’s marches that took place this weekend around the world, it was pink. For obvious, feminist-friendly reasons, it was common to see groups of women in matching rose ensembles and homemade hats. In this sea of pink, it was easy for Amy Schumer to stand out — and not just because she’s Amy Schumer.

The comedian and her cronies — who ranged from her sister-in-law to Madonna; no big deal — wore bright orange NASA jumpsuits. And while Schumer does look good in orange, there’s a deeper reason for the color choice. And, no, orange is not the new pink.

Perhaps it was a nod to President Donald Trump’s orange skin? Maybe not, but there are plenty of other possible reasons she could have chosen the uniform.

This isn’t the first time that Schumer has worn her NASA outfit. The comedian posted a clip on Instagram of her recent interview with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, when she wore the NASA jumpsuit. It kind of makes sense … astronomy … stars … they’re all related. In the clip, she says she chose the outfit to be prepared for anything upon meeting Tyson.

The Trainwreck star could have worn the outfit to the march in protest of Trump’s desire to change NASA’s direction, Bustle pointed out. However, more likely, it’s a reminder that women weren’t always allowed to become astronauts, among other professionals. She could be wearing it as a nod to how far women have come in the fight for equality while also recognizing there’s so much more to be done. She may have wanted to remind her fans that Trump’s administration might take America backward, but that he cannot be allowed to turn back time to when women’s rights were limited and restricted by law.

It could have also been a statement against gun violence. Hunters wear orange to avoid being accidentally shot, and the color has become a symbol of gun violence, the Daily Mail said. Schumer is a vocal advocate for gun control; in 2015 two women were killed and nine people were wounded during a screening of her film Trainwreck, and she has spoken out in favor of gun control many times.

Best guess? It’s a combination of all these things.

The jumpsuit was adorned with badges that read, “commander” and “NOPE,” and she carried a tiny Hillary Clinton figurine in her pocket.

So thanks to Schumer, in a way, the former FLOTUS was in attendance at the march she partially inspired after all.
