We've never really thought of paper plates and cups as cute before—since they're basically one step away from trash. (No offense.) But leave it to Whitney Port—A.K.A. Lauren Conrad's confidante on The Hills, the stylish star of The City, and the creator of the gorgeous line Whitney Eve—to go ahead and make a paper-and-plastic collection that is so damn adorable, you won't want to throw it out. (Like, ever.)
Port collaborated with modern tableware company Cheeky to create an exclusive, limited-edition collection for Target. (As if we needed another reason to love Target.) The line features disposable plates, bowls, napkins, cold cups, wine tumblers, and hot cups (in other words, everything you need for any party) all in bold, bright, vibrant patterns that will leave you just itching to play host. Besides being the most stylish collection of paper and plastic we've ever seen (and affordable—everything is $3.59), it's all also philanthropic: As with all Cheeky for Target collections, for every Cheeky item purchased from Whitney's collection, the company donates a meal to someone in need. To date, the company has donated more than 12 million meals. Cute for a cause? Sign. Us. Up.
The collection doesn't hit Target until March 26, but we've got an exclusive preview for you below—plus, insight and hosting tips from Port herself. (You're welcome.)
GLAMOUR: The collection with Cheeky is so adorable! Where did you draw your design inspiration from?
Whitney Port: My aesthetic in general is really California casual cool, with a bit of tropical. I wanted to maintain that throughout this collection and really focus on beautiful, bright floral prints and spring colors and tropical vibes. I feel like when the sun starts to shine in March and everybody is getting ready for spring, people just want brightness and happiness and I wanted to make sure that was reflected in all of the prints. So, it has the touch of girliness with a little bit of the florals and then a little bit more of the California cool vibe with the lemons and the palms. We thought to mix and match them, they all look really great together.
G: Do you have any personal favorites in the collection?
WP: I love the hot cup, the morning hot cup. I just think the the green palms and the lemons is so cute, and then it says "morning" on the holder. That one is just so cute. I love the napkins with the little dots that say "yes, please" because I find myself always saying that when I am anywhere. It's hard to pick a favorite; I love all of them so much equally.
G: We previously only used paper and plastic for super casual occasions. How does this collection change that?
WP: My mom was always so against paper and plastic cups, just for waste reasons and setting a pretty table was always really important to her. But for me to be able to create something that looks just as cute and just as curated and just as elevated as your regular glass and ceramic was such a cool thing for me. [This collection] looks just as beautiful as if you were using your finest china—and we also wanted it to be more casual. We don't want people to feel so much pressure when they are hosting and entertaining, and that they can have a really beautiful set up without worrying about the clean up and the mess afterwards.
G: It's basically a hostess' dream—a pretty table with no dishes to wash afterwards.
WP: Exactly! We hope that it gets people to want to host more and to not be scared of it and to not be worried about the clean up and to know that no one is going to look down on you if you are using paper or plastic.
G: You are a hostess extraordinaire. Please share some of your secrets!
WP: I think, honestly, being casual is key. That is something that I really love about this Cheeky collaboration. People can walk into a set-up and see paper and plastic on the tables and they feel immediately comfortable. I feel like there is nothing worse than when you walk into a hostess' house and everything is so tidy and you feel like you can't even get cozy and comfortable. Also, just in general, the prepping in advance is really important. I learned this from my mom with Thanksgiving—she measures everything out in advance and has everything labeled in the fridge in either Ziplocks or glass bowls and writes what it is, so when you go to make the recipes having everything measured out is like having your own little sous chef. I'm also a sucker for a cheese plate and I love assembling it, so I always have a cheese plate when I'm hosting for a group. That is always a crowd-pleaser.
G: We also love your style and taste. Any design tips you can share?
WP: For me, it is always about color—having pops of color. So, I love to get fresh fruit sometimes and just display that on the table. Adding fruit into centerpieces is always a cute idea!
Whitney Port for Cheeky will be available at Target until May 2017.
