Dakota Johnson Went for a ‘Sexual Flamenco Dancer’ Vibe at Vanity Fair's Young Hollywood Party

Bangs or no bangs? Dakota Johnson doesn’t have a preference between her trademark Fifty Shades look and her current off-the-forehead fringe. What she does prefer, however, is her hair long and easy and natural.

During Tuesday’s “A Celebration of Young Hollywood,” which was hosted by L’Oréal and Vanity Fair, the actress told Yahoo Style that she’s having a good hair day (for the record, her go-to stylist is one of our favorites, Mark Townsend).

“It’s nice to just not fuss over my hair for a while,” she said, adding that she’s growing it out. Johnson co-hosted the evening’s event, which celebrated the next generation of Hollywood.

“I was trying to figure out what is separating young Hollywood now from regular Hollywood or old Hollywood,” she said to reporters on the red carpet prior to the event. “It seems as though people across the board age-wise are being honored in the same breath. And I think it’s quite special. I don’t really see a difference. I guess it’s just nice to shed light on how talented the youth is these days.”

Fresh off the press tour for Fifty Shades Darker, the 27-year-old daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson played up her sensual side in a black lacy gown from the Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2017 collection. “I’m wearing it because it kind of looks like a sexual flamenco dancer,” she said with a grin.

While Meryl Streep accepted yet another award across town, her daughter, Grace Gummer, sang her praises. When asked for her thoughts on her mom’s recent acceptance speeches and crusade against President Trump, the 30-year-old told Yahoo Style that she is “super proud” of her mom.

“I think that was a rally and cry that hopefully people heard and will be taken into action. I think more people need to do stuff like that,” she explained. Gummer noted that she shares her mother’s sentiments, though she isn’t as accomplished at presenting them in the limelight. “I’m not very good at coming out and being in front of a bunch of people yet. But through my work, I hope to do that for sure,” she noted.

But one thing that Gummer admits to not inheriting from Streep is her impeccable sense of style. The actress joked that while her mom has been running about town in designer gowns since the onset of 2017, she herself has been lying low in the fashion department.

“It’s funny that I’m wearing a dress [tonight],” she said of her outfit for the evening. “I never wear dresses. I own a couple of them, but I mostly am a pants girl.” Growing up under Streep’s influence, Gummer admits to being more girly. However, her adult style has shifted to reflect more of a cozy feel. “I turned 30 and was like, ‘No more!’” she chirps. Needless to say, she’s not raiding her mom’s closet anytime soon.

Silicon Valley’s Amanda Crew arrived at the party with freshly lightened locks — “I just did it today because I wrapped my part of Season 3 of the show,” she revealed — as well as a dress from the “the bankrupt Nasty Gal. They are gone, but I got this dress before they left. I literally bought it the week that they stopped taking returns. Thankfully I got it tailored and it fits, but I was trying to return it, and they were like, ‘No. The company is gone.’ Which I’m sad about!” she proclaimed.

Inside the party, Johnson mingled fiercely with guests, barely having the time to nurse a glass of champagne. Behind her, a dancer in a black thong and nipple pasties slid up and down a pole on the bar while sashaying around with a feathery boa. It felt pretty appropriate, given Johnson’s current box office status. Melanie Lynskey and Jason Ritter made their first public appearance as a newly engaged couple and hung with pals on the smoking patio. Dove Cameron, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Patrick Schwarzenegger munched on risotto balls, tuna tartare, and lettuce wraps. And to wrap it all up, Yara Shahidi was the epitome of young and Hollywood in her casual ensemble.
