Tom Ford Brought Major Glamour Back to #NYFW

Compared with the European shows coming up later this month, New York Fashion Week has many things going for it: It’s packed with fresh young designers, the model lineups are (slightly) more diverse than the ones overseas, and the clothes are generally a tad more accessible than your typical Chanel gown. But one thing it’s often accused of lacking is glamour: NYFW’s streetwear roots just can’t compare with the big luxury fashion houses across the Atlantic.

That’s a discrepancy Tom Ford means to address, if his presentation last night is any indication. The itinerant designer, who in the past has showed in London and Los Angeles, brought his collection to New York City last night. And not just any old warehouse on the West Side — Ford hosted an intimate dinner at the site of the recently closed Four Seasons restaurant in the elegant, modernist Mies van der Rohe–designed Seagram Building. This room, where power players hobnobbed for more than 50 years (it’s famously where Jack Kennedy decided to run for president, no big), is as old-school classy as it gets. Which is sort of the point for one of the few American designers not afraid to go capital-G Glam.

As usual, Ford packed his show with more major-deal celebs from the world of fashion (Naomi Campbell, Iman), music (Zayn, Alicia Keys), and Hollywood (Julianne Moore, Tom Hanks). Of course, Hollywood is a world Ford is also busy conquering: His second feature film, Nocturnal Animals, recently debuted at the Venice Film Festival to a 10-minute ovation.

Once you’re through being dazzled by the location and guest list, what about the clothes? They were as luxurious and louche as you’d expect from Ford: Think leather tunics, slinky pencil shirts, exquisitely nipped-waist tweed blazers lashed with bondage belts, patchwork fur coats, and swingy sequined dresses. And, of course, there were major models galore, from newer faces like Gigi Hadid and Imaan Hammam to Ford favorites like Carolyn Murphy and Liya Kebede. Complete wardrobe for the international jet set, with more than a hint of ’70s swagger: achieved.
