The Symbolism of Melania and Ivanka Trump’s Inauguration Style
As the inauguration festivities kicked off on Friday, all eyes were on the incoming first family. What the new occupants of the White House wear in the first few days sets the tone for the next four years of their tenure. The tour kicked off with the traditional wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with Melania donning a military-inspired coat. Norisol Ferrari, the daughter of a wounded warrior, designed the custom outerwear, meant to send a strong message of support to U.S. troops.
Ivanka started off her tour donning Oscar de la Renta — for both her moving day to Washington, D.C., and the candlelight dinner on Thursday evening. Oscar de la Renta is known as being a favorite of first ladies, and by wearing the designer, Ivanka shows that she’s settling into her new role of first daughter quite comfortably.
For the candlelight dinner, Melania wore a glittering gown by Lebanese-born American designer Reem Acra — giving a nod of support to American immigrant designers — and for the inauguration ceremony, she wore a Jacqueline Kennedy-inspired powder blue dress-and-coat combo by the American designer Ralph Lauren. As the festivities wear on, there’s sure to be much more symbolism behind the first family’s looks.
