After the deafening roars of Coachella and Lollapalooza, it’s pretty perfect that here in New York (Fort Greene, Brooklyn, to be exact) there’s a little slice of soul in the form of Afropunk. Launched in 2005, the two-day celebration always boasts an incredible lineup of musicians with cool style to match. This year was no exception, with appearances by neo-soul singer D'Angelo, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and up-and-coming acts like SZA, The Internet, and hip-hop band Shabazz Palaces. Offstage, the fashion was as alluring as the music, with a mélange of cool looks worn on gorgeous and diverse crowd. Kente cloth turbans, larger-than-life colored Afros, drop-crotch pants, African-inspired looks, and skater swag were the pieces of choice for these stylized aesthetes. The Afropunk scene gets better and better every year. No wonder we keep coming back.
