The Fur Tail Trend is Happening, and There’s No Stopping It

You know how sometimes, you see something kooky on the runway and you get all Diana Vreeland about it, like “Fabulous, darling! Bring on the t*ts-out tops and face jewelry!!” Because you assume, as any sane person would, that said kooky look will have the good sense to stay on the runway? Well, in the never-ending quest for next-level lewks, some people are taking one runway accessory into the IRL realm. And it’s dumb and gross and we don’t like it.

Case in point: Yesterday, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton wore a fox fur tail to a post-game press conference. Men’s lifestyle brand Exclusive Game was quick to take credit for creating this piece, which is weird, because they clearly just sawed it off a sylvan creature’s backside and attached an 18K gold chain to it.

The rest of Newton’s outfit looks very Soho-dude cool. We can’t figure out why he’d look at himself in the mirror before entering the press conference and be all, “WOW, I look amazing, truly the only thing chicer would be if I had a manky piece of roadkill flapping against my skinny jeans.”

Meanwhile Anna Dello Russo, who is the human equivalent of the phrase “I’m game” posted this photo to her Instagram two days ago. In it, she proves that she has the uncanny knack of making a casual outfit look just as costumey as when she’s playing a Ukranian peasant. And, with her Miu Miu raccoon tail earring, she proves there’s literally no runway trend she won’t wear first and think “but does it suit me?” later.

Fur tails have a long history as an accessory — there was a mania amongst ‘50s kids for Davy Crockett hats, and for a certain kind of punk, the fur tail is as iconic an accessory as the studded belt. Most recently, we have Miu Miu to credit with their revival, when they appeared in that brand’s spring 2016 collection. This is one of those cases where something just looked way better on the runway. As part of the ladylike look here, the raccoon tail is a cheeky accent on the rich, jewel-tone stoles that’ve been done endlessly the past few seasons by brands from Shrimps to Sonia Rykiel.

It’s worth nothing that even on Miu Miu’s runway, the look is tricky to pull off. Here, the raccoon tail attached to the model’s waist makes for one very awkward accessory. Congratulations: you have just festooned yourself with a dangly furry phallus. It might be in, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it.
