Stylemakers Awards 2016 Red Carpet: Jenna Dewan Tatum, Nina Dobrev, Lily Collins
LOS ANGELES — Jenna Dewan Tatum was in the mood to show some leg in her Prabal Gurung gown.
“I put it on and it was very flowy and flirty and I sort of look like that red emoji, the dancer girl emoji,” she said. “I’m a dancer so leg, [cutouts], glitter — all of that stuff is like Kryptonite to me.”
The starlet made her way down the red carpet at Quixote Studios in West Hollywood where she was honored as a style renegade at Variety and WWD’s second annual Stylemakers awards.
WWD and Variety are both owned by Penske Media Corp.
The awards represent the convergence of the fashion and entertainment industries and aim to spotlight the fashion designers, costume designers and hair and makeup artists whose work is sometimes overshadowed by their celebrity clients.
“It’s fun to see people from the beauty industry, people from the fashion industry and people from the entertainment industry all collide for this fun and exciting event and you get to see each person’s own unique style at something like this,” said designer Michael Costello.
This year’s cast of Stylemaker honorees include fashion designer Zuhair Murad, stylist Petra Flannery, hairstylist Danilo, makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, costume designer Albert Wolsky, style innovator Diplo and style innovator Tracee Ellis Ross, along with Dewan Tatum.
“[Stylemakers are] people that are boldly and courageously being themselves that aren’t afraid to be free and creative in their expression, both in how they are in the world, in their clothing and in the art that they make,” Ellis Ross said. “I think if you look at the list [of honorees] you really can feel that in all of them so I feel very excited to be in the group.”
Emma Stone, Jen Atkin, Nina Dobrev and Lily Collins served as presenters to the honorees, while Warren Beatty was among the guests.
Dobrev, who was presenting Murad with an award, also donned the designer for the day.
“I’ve worn Zuhair more times than I can count on the carpet for premieres, for awards shows,” she said. “My first very big awards show I wore Zuhair and the Emmys is a very, very scary intimidating carpet to be on for the first time for any young person. I remember putting the dress on and instantly feeling confident.”
Collins, who presented Wolsky with an award, showered her own accolades on the costume designer.
“He is a phenomenon,” she said. “He helped create what is ‘Grease’ among many other films, but he really is such an incredible human being. He’s a dear friend of mine and I couldn’t be prouder….Costume designers help inform a character. They help create the way a character moves and who that person is in general. The way that you feel as a character changes according to what outfits you wear.”
The afternoon event reiterated that theme time and time again, pressing upon the significance of the honorees and their roles in their respective industries.
“They deserve the recognition,” said Anastasia Soare, founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills. “They are the closest to all the stars that we watch and we are so enamored by and I think it’s important for people t know that. We are the confidants. We protect them. We make them beautiful, and I think we need a little recognition.”
“Entourage” actress Emmanuelle Chriqui echoed the thought.
“With all the artists we choose to work with, as we evolve they evolve with us,” Chriqui said. “They’re artists, so they’re so down to take a risk and go outside the box and try new things and be creative. And sometimes they inspire me to go outside my comfort zone and do something different and it’s important. At the end of the day, we’re having fun. It’s fashion. It’s hair. It’s makeup.”
