A Student Created a Powerful Sexual Assault Photo Series After Brock Turner's Jail Release

From Cosmopolitan

Just after Brock Turner, the Stanford rapist, was released from jail after serving half of his six-month sentence, student photographer Yana Mazurkevich released a powerful photo series called It Happens, which shows, in hauntingly beautiful photos, the harsh reality of the prevalence of sexual assault.

Originally published in a Facebook post from Current Solutions, a website with a mission to help survivors safely share their stories of sexual assault and intimate partner violence, Mazurkevich's photos can be hard to look at, but she meant them to be that way. "I want to show the reality of issues like this, because it's not a sugar-coated kind of topic whatsoever," she told Cosmopolitan.com. "It's real, it's raw, and it's out there."

Mazurkevich's photos show sexual assault can happen to anyone, anywhere, at anytime. "Assault happens to anyone, regardless of the color of your skin or your sexual orientation, your skin color, or relationship status," she said. You can see all of Mazurkevich's photos from the It Happens series below. Some of the images show violent situations, and might be upsetting or disturbing.
