Step Aside, Flower Girl! Meet the “Flower Man” Who Served In His Cousin’s Wedding
A great start to a life full of love and laughter. Patrick Casey played an important, if unusual, role in his cousin Andria’s wedding earlier this month. But it put a smile on everyone’s face.
“I wasn’t nervous about being the flower man,” he tells The Knot. “I just wanted to make sure I didn’t break [my facial expression] and I didn’t! I mostly prepared in my head and visualized it—I cleared everything with the bride and groom though. They encouraged all of it!”
As Casey tells it, he filled in as both flower girl and ring bearer at Andria’s wedding, an ode to the cousins’ joint duties at another wedding from when they were both little kids.
“Everything came together because I lobbied hard for the position since before the bride and groom were even engaged!” Casey says. “I thought it would be a fun call-back to when the bride and I were in a wedding together as children—she was the flower girl and I was the ring bearer. Plus, I figured, I bet all good marriages have a lot of laughter, so why not add a bit of appropriate levity to one’s wedding ceremony?”

In a video since shared on YouTube, Casey, who owns a public relations firm in Appleton, Wisconsin, can be seen strutting down the aisle stiffly carrying a basket full of flower petals, a serious expression on his face. He tosses fistfuls of petals to either side of the aisle as he makes his way toward the altar. Just before he gets there, however, he stops to make a memorable gesture.

“I think there was a bit of skepticism at first, but when I stopped at the end of the aisle, put the basket down, pulled flower petals out of my pants’ pocket and threw them in the air like LeBron does with powder before games, most, if not all, people were won over. There was an ovation,” he says. “I wasn’t able to see Andria’s face, but I’d imagine it had a pretty big smile on it!”

As for Casey’s other task at hand, as ring bearer, the thoughtful cousin says he encountered just one tiny problem.
“The real battle was with the heat,” he concludes to The Knot. “Let’s just say their rings were a little sweaty when I handed them over.”
