We know that Game of Thrones pays A LOT of attention to detail with their elaborate sets and costumes, but we didn’t realize it went this far. Sophie Turner has shared how Sansa’s hair in the show actually has a secret meaning behind it, and our minds are BLOWN.

The actor was chatting to Refinery29 where she explained that nothing about the way that Sansa’s hair looks like in Game of Thrones is accidental. Rather, she revealed, her character’s hair reflects what she’s going through at the time.

“There’s always a pattern,” Turner said, discussing how her character’s hair has changed over the show’s six (soon to be seen) seasons. “It’s never random.”

While she said that she might not have a say about how her character’s hair looks, Turner did say that she totally got where the producers were coming from with the different styles.

“Sansa’s hair is constantly reflecting the people she’s learning from, or mimicking, or inspired by at the time,” she said. “When she’s Cersei’s prisoner, and she’s kind of absorbing all her manipulative techniques, it’s reflected in her hairstyle, and when she’s finding the spirit of Margaery in herself, she wears her hair like Margaery.”

Turner did reveal which of the styles that Sansa has rocked over six seasons of Game of Thrones she likes best, saying that it was when her character’s hair was dyed black and pulled back in french braids.

“It was her own look, and something that she’d created,” the actor opined.

Given that Sophie Turner is a natural blonde, making sure that she maintains Sansa’s usual red hair must take it’s toll, and the star says that she relies on intensive hair treatments, like Wella’s Oil Reflections Luminous Reboost Mask, to keep her hair healthy.

Turner, who is also a brand ambassador for Wella, said that she also uses the brand’s EIMI Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray to prevent breakages and damage while her hair is either being straightened or curled. “It’s so, so, so important, especially if you’re just having your hair kind of burnt every day, which is basically what straightening and curling is,” she said.

Meanwhile, the new trailer for Game of Thrones seventh season just dropped, and it’s left us gagging to return to Westeros (and to see what other intricate hairstyles Sansa might rock).

Thankfully, we don’t have that long to wait, as GoT returns to HBO on July 17th.
