Sometimes Disney creates magical attractions at their theme parks, that you’ll queue up for and wait HOURS just to experience for a mere four minutes (ahem, Frozen Ever After).

Other times, Disney creates magical attractions that are just like…okay. These attractions are few and far between, because everything Disney sprinkles with pixie dust usually turns into a magical pot of happiness. So it’s rare for Disney to unveil an attraction that isn’t like 110% amazing, but it happens. It happens to the best of us. And that’s what happened with Stitch’s Great Escape in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom.

So there’s some bummer news if you LOVE Stitch: It’s going to begin the slow process of closing down for good. Here’s some great news if you’ve never been a fan of Stitch: It’s going to begin the slow process of closing down for good, and will be replaced by something else!!

The story of how Stitch’s Great Escape came to be is a very long one (Theme Park Tourist has THE BEST write up about it if you’ve got time) and since it’s opening in 2004 it has routinely found itself at the TOP of the list for the LEST liked Disney World attraction. So, hearing about it closing is no big surprise whatsoever. The ride is basically a stationary-simulator, where you’re locked in a seat for 10-ish minutes, while all sorts of CRAZY ALIEN STUFF HAPPENS AROUND YOU.

While Disney isn’t exactly shutting it down for good just yet, it is going to start closing it down for long periods of time, starting on October 2nd 2016, Stitch is going to close down. But then it will open up again for the Thanksgiving time period at the parks (November 19-26) and then again during Christmas (December 17 – January 2). In between those times, the lights will be dark on Stitch…

…probably to make way for something bigger and better. There’s been a lot of talk that a new Wreck-It Ralph ride would go into Stitch’s current location, and this closure all but officially confirms it. After January 2nd, there doesn’t seem to be any talk of Stitch opening back up again, so it might truly close for good at that time.

But hey, out with the old, in with the new. Stitch will be gone, but not forgotten (if only because at one point during your childhood, you were traumatized by it and are still having nightmares).
