I Ambushed People with Ivanka Trump's Perfume and Here’s What Happened
Ivanka Trump‘s eponymous fragrance is currently the bestselling perfume on Amazon.
The perfume, which retails for $60, is described on the site as “an alluring and feminine floral Oriental, … a symbol of strength in grace and beauty.” But are people really buying it because it’s a great scent? Or, are they shelling out their cash to show support for the Trump family, as a backlash to stores — such as Nordstrom, HSN ann Nieman Marcus — who have recently dropped the Ivanka Trump brand?
News reports suggest the latter, but we wanted to see what real people think — so I hit the streets of Times Square to get people’s true reactions to Ivanka’s fragrance, and to kick off our brand-new series, “Sound Off With Jihan,” where I ask people their opinions on a hot topic in the news.
It was important that the smell test was blind — we didn’t want the name of the fragrance to affect anyone’s perception of the scent — so we asked people to take a sniff before we revealed the brand to them.
And the feedback on the fragrance was positive — people, for the most part, liked it! Some said it was “summery” and “wakening,” while others likened it to both “Febreeze” and “my mom,” but in a good way.
When we revealed who made the fragrance, however, attitudes changed. A few said they definitely would not buy it a fragrance by Ivanka Trump, while some open-minded sniffers said it wouldn’t matter to them.
