Scandal Might Be Ending After Season Seven

We hope this isn't true: According to a report from TVLine, "Scandal" is ending after its seventh season.

It's difficult to imagine television without Scandal—and, more specifically, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). We've watched Olivia and her band of gladiators put out political fires in Washington, D.C. for five glorious years. The show dipped for a few seasons, but it's finally back to a good place. Olivia's doing what she does best again, and the plot is actually engaging (as opposed to just bonkers). For the first time in years, we're actually craving more Scandal.

But this might be the end of the line for Pope and Co. TV Line reports that Scandal will bow out after its seventh season. Say it ain't so!

Granted, ABC has not confirmed TV Line's report. (We reached out to the network ourselves, but they had no comment.) However, the publication insists that multiple sources said Scandal is done after season seven. The show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, allegedly contacted ABC about ending the series, and they accepted her request. (Again, we don't know any of this for sure—so don't panic just yet.)

Obviously, this news is devastating if it's true, but it's important to think about the big picture. If Rhimes is truly done with Scandal, then it shouldn't continue. This is a show built on high-stakes drama, epic plot twists, and ever-evolving love triangles. If the story isn't crafted carefully, then it runs the risk of becoming some kind of soap opera. And that's the last thing Scandal fans, myself included, want. One more incredible season of Scandal is far better than six sub-par ones.

Rhimes previously revealed that she knows exactly how Scandal will end. "I feel like there is a finite amount of Scandal to be told,” she told NPR, according to TV Line. “So I know what the end of Scandal will be, and I feel really good about that. And I can see where the end point is. And I don’t think I’m going to change that.”

Maybe we'll see what she has in mind sooner rather than later. Stock up on red wine and popcorn.
