‘Sanju’ Poster: Manisha Koirala As Nargis Dutt

Rajkumar Hirani shared the poster of Manisha Koirala as Sanjay Dutt’s mother, Nargis in his biopic, Sanju. It was Sanjay’s mother, Nargis who fondly called her son, Sanju and that’s how he earned his nickname.

Sanjay Dutt is said to have shared a very special bond with Nargis and it was she who made him quit drugs. But, after her demise, Sanjay once again resorted to his old ways. Sanjay Dutt was a young man of 22 when he lost his mother, the legendary Nargis Dutt to cancer.

On being a part of Sanju, Manisha had earlier said: "I am really honoured to have played Nargis Duttji in the film. It's like any actress' dream role. Though I have a very small role in the film... It's a special appearance, but I am really excited to know audience reaction about my role and the film."

In an unauthorised biography - Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy (Juggernaut Books) by Yasser Usman, the author writes how Sanjay grew up as a spoilt brat. In fact, for the longest time, his mother was in denial about his addiction.

"She trusted Sanjay against the mounting evidence that he was an addict. Even when well-wishers tried to talk to Nargis about Sanjay, her default reply was, ‘My son never drinks and never touches drugs.’8 According to Priya Dutt, Nargis was so firmly in denial that ‘once I heard Mom say to a friend, “Why is Sanjay’s room always locked when his friends are there? What is the big deal? I hope he’s not gay.”" - An excerpt from ‘Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy’
