Russell Westbrook is Proof That Wide-Leg Pants Are Happening Again

The man has mastered heat-wave style—get into it.

By Megan Gustashaw.

Russell Westbrook clearly has no fear when it comes to getting dressed and thus, the Thunder point guard has worn a lot of crazy pants in his time. While some of these pants have no place in the larger fashion conversation (see: camo leggings), others are like a time capsule of that specific moment in menswear. When torn-to-shreds skinny denim became a thing, Westbrook was there to represent. Same with tailored sweats, dad jeans, and even overalls. That the NBA Style Award nominee rolled up to the Dior Homme show at Paris Fashion Week over the weekend in a pair of wide-leg pants is also meaningful.

For one, designers have been trying really hard to make wide-leg cuts happen for several seasons now—and it seems to be working, too. Russell Westbrook is one of many stylish guys who’ve casually adopted a looser fit recently. Granted, Dior Homme dressed him for the show, but there were plenty of guys sitting in the front row (Rami Malek, Christian Slater) in ordinary, slim-cut pants by the French house.

With this weird and wonderful outfit, Westbrook is also showing the world what dressing for a heat-wave looks like; breezy fabrics, wider shapes, practically no layers or even accessories to speak of. According to science and people with common sense, we’re unfortunately going to be having a lot of sweltering days in the coming years. Skinny denim, sweats, and slim-cut suit trousers were not built for this type of weather. Westbrook’s outfit though? It’s ready for an A.C.-blasted office and a sweltering morning commute.
