Royal Jordanian Airlines Bans All Electronic Devices

Cellphones and medical devices needed during flight are excluded.

Royal Jordanian airlines announced on Twitter on Monday that passengers cannot bring any electronic devices on flights to or from the U.S.

“Following instructions from the concerned US departments, we kindly inform our dearest passengers departing to and arriving from the United States that carrying any electronic or electrical device on board the flight cabins is strictly prohibited,” the statement reads. “Cellular phones and medical devices needed during the flight are excluded from the ban.”

Prohibited devices include:

  • laptops

  • tablets

  • cameras

  • DVD players

  • electronic games

Royal Jordanian said any of the above must be stored in checked baggage.

While the reason behind the ban is unclear - as is what U.S. departments the airline is referring to - recent incidents have caused concerns about lithium-ion batteries on flights. Cellphone batteries have caused repeated problems, and earlier this month a passenger's headphones exploded mid-flight.
