Rosamund Pike looked cool, composed and glamorous in her red Givenchy gown at last evening’s Oscars, and that’s because the actress was fully taking in every moment of her experience. The Best Actress nominee said she tried to bring the day’s excitement into her usual routine. Pike somehow managed to fit a full day in before heading to the ceremony and said she felt it was important to keep the history of the Academy Awards in mind as she did it.

“I played with my children, fed my baby several times, I worked out – went for a run to get those endorphins going in the right way and get all the nervous energy out – and watched a documentary on the history of the Oscars,” Pike told us. “I thought that would place this day in its historical context, which is wonderful. When you’re in your own little island, as everybody is when they’re getting ready, it’s good to feel what you’re part of.” When asked how she managed to fit all that in before getting dressed she replied, “I’m efficient! I’m a mother of two.”

The actress has gotten raves for her impressive performance as Amy in Gone Girl, a film that follows a woman who goes far off the rails. For Pike, it’s deeply meaningful that this part in particular has gotten attention and nominations.

“It means that women don’t have to be liked to be admired,” she said. “It’s nice that we’re allowed to have a woman who’s sort of reprehensible and presents a different version of women, yet somehow she got inside everyone’s skin and stayed memorable. I think it changes the tone. I think people understand her. She was truthful, you know? I wouldn’t say she’s authentically herself, because she’s never that, but it’s good to know that we have a version of women out there other than just the nurturing, maternal, loving type. Amy allows us to see that we can honor women who express their rage and their grievance.”

The actress added that she selected her red gown simply to veer off-course from her usual stylistic choices. “I’ve worn a lot of black and white,” Pike noted. “I tend to go monochrome. So come on, it’s the last night of the show, let’s wear a proper color.
