Singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran announced that one of his new songs was originally written for Rihanna, and we’re all ears! Ed is gearing up to release his next studio album. Additionally, at the top of the year, he released two awesome singles, “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You.” They are both expertly crafted, and we wouldn’t expect anything less.

But according to the singer, he didn’t initially write “Shape of You” for himself.

The artist talked a bit about his new album with BBC Radio 1. Most importantly, he dished on how his island-themed hit was created.

BBC Radio 1 posted a clip of Ed Sheeran and Nick Grimshaw’s interview on Twitter.

“Then I started singing lyrics like ‘putting Van the Man on the jukebox,’ and I was like, ‘Well, she’s not really going to sing that, is she?'” Ed shared with host Nick Grimshaw.

We can’t get enough of celebrity behind-the-scenes moments.

The tropical beat makes us think of Rihanna songs. But we’re so happy Ed decided to keep it for himself.

Take a listen for yourself, below!

Amazing, right? If you’re anything like us, you can’t stop singing along to this track either. It’s catchy and serves up a really cool island feel. Not surprisingly, because these are two things that Rihanna is notorious for. The lyrics, however, aren’t quite fitting for the pop princess.

Ed and his writing team made a great call to keep it for his next project. We’re looking forward to hearing what he releases next!
