A first day of school outfit fit for a royal — literally.

Two-year-old Prince George started nursery school on Wednesday. He was escorted to Westacre Montessori School, which is near the family’s home (aka Anmer Hall in Norfolk, a humble palace), by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The toddler, who obviously thought long and hard about what he was going to wear, bundled up in a quilted navy blue coat with brown corduroy patches on the elbows, a hood, and tartan lining. He also carried a light blue backpack, which looked a lot like a Fjallraven, the Swedish company known for its minimalist sacks. Let the Prince George effect commence!

There were no journalists or paparazzi around for the big moment, unlike when his father marked the momentous occasion. (Prince William wore a darling striped sweater and red shorts and was walked into his classroom by his mother, Princess Diana, and father, Prince Charles.) Instead, a selection of pictures, taken by budding photographer the Duchess of Cambridge, were shared by Kensington Palace on social media.

William, who was on hand, most likely shed a few tears at drop-off. In a recent interview, he admitted that becoming a parent has made him more of a softy. “Now the smallest little things, you well up a little more, you get affected by the sort of things that happen around the world or whatever a lot more, I think, as a father,” he said in a documentary that aired on ITV on Monday. “Just because you realize how precious life is, and it puts it all in perspective. The idea of not being around to see your children grow up and stuff like that.”
