Prada Has a Brilliant Plan to Sell More Bags

Today, Prada showed its forthcoming fall 2016 collection in Milan, and as always, Miuccia Prada served up an artful mix of references. There were supermodern silhouettes mixed with flapper-style spit curls. There were sailor hats, harlequin tights, cosmic-printed tops, desert-print dresses, and the type of corsets usually worn by romance-novel heroines (albeit rendered in sterile white cotton that lent them an eerie Richard Prince vibe).

Perhaps most notably, Prada debuted what the less cynical would call a cool new styling trick, and what the more cynical (that is, us) would call a naked attempt to sell more purses. Models were sent down the runway wearing either bags in unusual locations, like on a necklace, or wearing as many as six purses at a time.

Here, a model wears Prada’s latest innovation, the purse-necklace. Although, to be fair, Zara already tried it.

Squint and you’ll miss them, but here, Prada’s new, teeny-tiny box bags dangle from a model’s waist belt (holding a lipstick each, perhaps?), while the classic Prada accordion bag holds everything else.

Bags on bags on bags. Literally.

Can’t decide which purse to wear? Just carry all of them at once!

And the pièce de résistance of this brilliant new bag-selling strategy: the charm necklace, featuring (what else?) three teeny box clutches. Collect them all!
