People are not happy about Hilary Duff’s new boyfriend’s Halloween costume
Halloween is one of the best times of the year because it’s the introduction to the holiday season. I mean who doesn’t love Halloween candy and dressing up? But there’s a downside to the holiday, and it’s usually when people break out insensitive costumes, sometimes without even knowing how out of touch they look. We already have our first Halloween fail of the year and (ugh, we hate to say it) it’s Hillary Duff’s boyfriend’s Native American costume.
On Friday, Hilary stepped out to attend the Casamigos party hosted by the tequila company co-founders Rande Gerber, George Clooney, and Mike Meltman. Duff as always looked amazing and although her costume has some American Horror Story vibes, the couple’s “pilgrim and Indian” look rubbed many on social media the wrong way. With her new beau Jason Walsh in a Native American headdress and face paint, the couple is basically a PSA for cultural appropriation.

Some of Duff’s fans took to Twitter to express their feelings about the risky costume, especially in light of the ongoing Dakota Access Pipeline protests.
All of this comes a day after Chris Hemsworth issued an apology for doing the exact same thing last year, just at New Year’s Eve. The actor wrote in a statement, “Last New Year’s Eve I was at a Lone Ranger-themed party where some of us, myself included wore the traditional dress of First Nations people.” He added, “I was stupidly unaware of the offense this may have caused and the sensitivity around this issue. I sincerely and unreservedly apologize to all First Nations people for this thoughtless action. I now appreciate that there is a great need for a deeper understanding of the complex and extensive issues facing indigenous communities. I hope that in highlighting my own ignorance I can help in some small way.”
