NYFW Fashmatics: Libertine
Cali-boy designer Johnson Hartig showed his collection for the cult-label Libertine last night at NYFW. As usual, Hartig re-appropriated vintage garb (like a 1920s flapper dress and Comme des Garçons coat), and made it new by meticulous hand beading and the addition of kitschy patches.
Art enthusiasts rejoice—Hartig included art history references throughout his entire line. There were some very literal examples like a tailored suit adorned with Marcel Duchamp urinal patches and “pop” sweaters that looked just like an Andy Warhol original.
This season, Hartig also branched out into some psychedelic prints that were produced specially in Italy. Some of the standout looks included men’s jumpsuits, trousers, and a1950s coat that looked like a work of art—literally. This Libertine runway look illustrates one part Salvador Dali’s “Swans Reflecting Elephants” (1937) with one part Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” to create the most surreal look.
