#NYFW Breakdown Day 3: Altuzarra

Leave it to Joseph Altuzarra, known for his razor-sharp tailoring and classic silhouettes, to find inspiration in the works of movie masters Stanley Kubrick and Roman Polanski. The designer studied the 18th century costumes of Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon” (the film won an Oscar for it’s softly lit, romantic cinematography in 1975) and looked to Mia Farrow’s wardrobe in “Rosemary’s Baby,” which featured lots of pretty pastel shifts. And though he sent his models down the runway in innocent pinks, florals and ginghams, there was something sinister about the looks— a slash of leather here, a black bra there— to suggest something darker lies beneath. He capped it all off by playing the creepy score to “Rosemary’s Baby.”
